Thursday, November 08, 2007 2:36:41 PM
By CELEAN JACOBSON

Helen Suzman is photographed during an interview with the Associated Press in Johannesburg, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007. At 90, the woman celebrated for her fight against apartheid is still fighting injustice, corruption and incompetence where ever she sees it. (AP Photo/Denis Farrell) JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - For 13 years, Helen Suzman was the sole opposition lawmaker in South Africa's parliament, raising her voice time after time against the introduction of racist legislation.

Celebrated for her fight against apartheid, she is still tackling injustice, corruption and incompetence wherever she sees it — her tongue and wit as sharp as ever.

As South Africa marked her 90th birthday, Suzman spoke optimistically Thursday about the future of a country whose history she helped write. The nation today, without the racial discrimination and oppression of apartheid, is a far better place, she said, and relations across its racial divide have changed a lot in her lifetime.
