Somali President Has Bronchitis

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 10:16:09 AM
By TOM MALITI

FILE ** Somalia's President Abdullahi Yusuf talks to reporters at his home in Nairobi, Kenya in this March 18, 2005 file photo. Somalia's president was hospitalized Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 in the capital of neighboring Kenya for a "severe cold" but his condition was stable, officials said. The 73-year-old Abdullahi Yusuf, who had a liver transplant in 1996, was flown to Nairobi early Tuesday and was able to walk from the plane to a waiting car, said Ali Mohamed Sheik, a protocol officer for the Somali Embassy in Kenya. (AP Photo/Sayyid Azim, file)NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf is suffering from bronchitis and is using an oxygen mask, an official said Wednesday as the African leader spent a second day in the hospital in Kenya.

Contradictory reports have emerged on the condition of Yusuf, 73, who has had chronic health problems for years and received a new liver in 1996. His hospitalization creates more uncertainty for his volatile country, where his weak government is battling an Islamic insurgency.

"The president is using an oxygen mask. He has bronchitis," said the official, who had direct knowledge of Yusuf's condition and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue."
