NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Swarms of desert locusts have invaded Kenya's arid northeast for the first time since 1962, officials said Friday.
The ravenous pests, which can devastate crops, contributed to a major food crisis in West Africa three years ago. Locusts can eat their own weight in food every day.
The Ministry of Agriculture says it is spraying affected areas from the ground and from aircraft, but the region's sandy soil provides good conditions for the locusts to lay eggs.
