ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - A roadside bomb targeting a police patrol exploded east of Algeria's capital, killing two officers and injuring two others, Algerian newspaper reports said Thursday.
The attack Wednesday, about 30 miles east of Algiers, came as authorities rounded up 11 suspected members of two suspected support networks for armed Islamic militant groups in recent days in western Algeria, La Tribune and Le Quotidien d'Oran reported.
Authorities in Algeria have been battling the remnants of an Islamic insurgency that broke out in the early 1990s, when the army canceled the second round of multiparty elections to prevent the expected victory of an Islamic fundamentalist party. As many as 200,000 people have died in the ensuing violence.
