UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Algerian government ignored a plea from the United Nations for tighter security eight months before twin truck bombs exploded, killing 17 U.N. staffers and at least 20 other people, a U.N. official said Wednesday.
The Dec. 11 blast that tore apart the U.N. offices in the upscale Hydra neighborhood in Algiers was the deadliest single attack against U.N. staff and facilities since August 2003, when the world body's headquarters in Baghdad was hit by a truck laden with explosives.
The attack added to the increasing worries among U.N. officials for the safety of their staff and missions, and a sense of urgency to demands that nation-members provide suitable security around all United Nations offices.
