KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - The Sudanese government released seven Darfur rebel delegates Thursday it had arrested despite their U.N. and African Union protection, the United Nations mission to Darfur said.
The delegates from the Justice and Equality Movement were arrested late last month in the North Darfur capital of El Fasher, where they were part of a cease-fire commission organized by the AU and U.N.
The U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as UNAMID, had repeatedly called for their release because they were supposed to have immunity as negotiators in the government-held town.
