2 French Journalists Released in Niger

Friday, January 18, 2008 2:22:52 PM
By DALATOU MAMANE

A poster showing photos of French journalists Thomas Dandois and Pierre Creisson, is seen on the Trocadero plaza in Paris, during a gathering of Members of the Committee for their Liberation, along with members of Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008. Reporter Thomas Dandois and cameraman Pierre Creisson were taken in for questioning in December 2007, while filming a piece for French-German television channel Arte in northern Niger. Their Nigerian driver Al Hassane Abdourahmann was also detained. The French journalists have been charged with "threatening state security", as their driver has been charged with "complicity in threatening state security". The placards showing the photos of Dandois and Creisson read NIAMEY, Niger (AP) - Two French journalists potentially facing the death penalty for reporting on rebel groups in Niger's northern desert have been released on bail, a reporter's rights group said Friday.

Cameraman Thomas Dandois and reporter Pierre Creisson left the prison compound after posting bail, according to the Paris-based watchdog Reporters Without Borders.

The two planned to leave for France on an overnight flight, the statement said.
