PARIS (AP) - France raised the alert level Thursday for its military forces in Chad following intelligence reports that rebels were moving toward the African country's capital, a military spokesman said.
The U.S. Embassy in the capital, N'Djamena, warned that "the current situation in eastern Chad is unstable" and said tanks had been deployed to protect the presidential palace.
A Chad rebel group, UFDD, in November declared a "state of war" against French and other foreign armies, in an apparent warning to a European force expected to deploy soon in both Chad and neighboring Central African Republic.
