NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner on Friday said France would reimburse Mauritania for the losses it suffered after the cancellation last month of the Dakar Rally.
The French organizers of the 5,760-mile race canceled the motor rally after back-to-back terror attacks in Mauritania, including the slaying of four French tourists. Although the race, which has run for 30 years, crosses several African countries, its cancellation was especially harmful to Mauritania, whose remote, dune-enveloped hamlets rely on the influx of tourists that come along with the cars and motorcycles.
France, said Kouchner, "will compensate for the losses Mauritania suffered as a result of the assassination of the four French tourists and the cancellation of the rally," he said.
