NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A top African diplomat said Friday that talks to end Kenya's deadly postelection crisis have reached a crucial stage as the two sides broke off negotiations for the weekend without reaching a deal on sharing power.
Despite weeks of international pressure, President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga had not agreed on how to resolve a crisis stemming from the Dec. 27 election, which local and foreign observers say was rigged.
"We are satisfied with the progress made on the Kenya national dialogue and reconciliation," said Jean Ping, chairman of the African Union Commission, the AU's executive body. He added: "I have an impression that we are moving."
