NEW YORK (AP) - A man accused of strangling his 14-year-old daughter and stuffing her body in a boiler pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of murder and manslaughter from his room at Bellevue Hospital Center, prosecutors said.
Miguel Matias, 34, was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination. His attorney, Roy Schwartz, said Matias has a history of mental problems and was hospitalized at least twice, once for "suicidal tendencies." Police said Matias tried to hang himself while in custody.
Matias told police he strangled his daughter Ana after he found her writing "sex things" on a computer. During the hearing, prosecutor Elizabeth McGrath read from a rambling statement Matias gave police and prosecutors, which detailed how he initially picked up a bat, but fearing blood, instead tied a knot around an electrical cord and used it to strangle her.
