CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Police arrested 26 members of the Muslim Brotherhood in an ongoing crackdown on Egypt's largest Islamic opposition group ahead of next month's local election, a security official and the group's Web site said.
The arrests took place in separate raids on the homes of Brotherhood members and a house north of the capital. Senior Brotherhood leaders were meeting with candidates the group plans to field in the April 8 polling for local councils, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
Those arrested included Mahmoud Ghazlan from the group's Guidance Council, the top decision-making body in the movement, according to a statement on the group's Web site.
