Japan May Consider Another BOJ Candidate

(AP Photo/Issei Kato, POOL, FILE)TOKYO (AP) - Japan's prime minister is considering pushing another candidate for the top slot at the central bank to end a deepening deadlock with the opposition, the top government spokesman said Friday.

With just five days until Bank of Japan Gov. Toshihiko Fukui's term ends March 19, Japan has been unable to agree on the best man to take his place.

On Wednesday, the opposition-controlled upper house of parliament voted down Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's initial pick, Deputy Gov. Toshiro Muto, claiming his background as a former bureaucrat at the Ministry of Finance would undermine the central bank's independence.
