Myanmar Dissidents Make Appeal

Friday, March 14, 2008 5:05:32 AM

Protesters stage a die-in to depict the alleged political situation and the plight of political prisoners in Myanmar Thursday, March 13, 2008, in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Manila's financial district of Makati, Philippines. The protesters called on the military junta to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. (AP Photo/Pat Roque)BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Myanmar dissidents urged voters Friday to reject a military-drafted constitution that will be presented to them in an upcoming referendum.

A statement from The 88 Generation Students said the May referendum would be a "sham" and described the draft constitution as a document that would only perpetuate military domination of the country.

"People who are eligible to vote should go to polling stations and put `No' votes in the ballot boxes. You do not need to be afraid. The authorities have no right to arrest you for voting against this constitution," the statement said.
