HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - The government is screening foreign journalists ahead of this month's presidential election amid suspicion that some may be spying for hostile Western nations, the official media reported Sunday.
At least 300 foreign journalists have applied for accreditation under Zimbabwe's sweeping media laws, the state Sunday Mail said. Priority is being given to journalists from Africa and other developing nations that are sending election monitors, it said.
Zimbabwe's government has barred Western observers from monitoring the March 29 vote. Western media organizations, including The Associated Press, have received no word on accreditation requests submitted weeks ago.
