BEIJING (AP) - China's ceremonial parliament prepared to end its annual session Tuesday, overshadowed by deadly anti-government protests in Tibet.
The National People's Congress renewed the mandates of the president and premier and approved other new appointments, including the vice president, three vice premiers and the defense minister. The public security minister, in charge of the police, was promoted to a rank just above minister.
It adopted an administrative reorganization plan reducing the number of ministries by one to 27 and was due to approve a 17.6 percent jump in defense spending.
