SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says he's committed to making Australia a republic but it's "not a top order priority," as he prepared to meet Britain's Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.
Australia is a constitutional monarchy and the British sovereign is its head of state. Ending Britain's sovereignty over Australia is part of the new prime minister's Labor Party platform.
While the country's status was unlikely to come up during Rudd's London meeting with the queen royal diplomacy is mostly limited to niceties, not politics the visit inevitably led to questions about the leader's stance on the topic.
