Cano, A-Rod Help Yankees Hold Back Rays

Monday, April 14, 2008 9:52:44 PM

New York Yankees' Hideki Matsui (55), of Japan, greets Alex Rodriguez at the plate after Rodriguez hit a solo homer off Tampa Bay Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine during the first inning of a baseball game Monday, April 14, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Fla. The home run was Rodriguez's 521st, tying him with Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 15th place on the career list. The run Rodriguez scored was his 500th with the Yankees. (AP Photo/Steve Nesius)ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Robinson Cano's pinch-hit homer snapped an eighth-inning tie, and Alex Rodriguez hit No. 521 to match Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Willie McCovey on the career list during the New York Yankees' 8-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

With shortstop Derek Jeter back in the lineup, Yankees starter Ian Kennedy cruised into the seventh inning with a 7-2 lead before he was hit on the right hip by Jason Bartlett's line drive.

The infield single knocked a hobbling Kennedy out of the game, and Tampa Bay hit three quick homers off New York's bullpen before the inning was over to tie the score at 7.
