Pope: 'Ashamed' of Clergy Abuse Scandal

Tuesday, April 15, 2008 1:47:36 PM
By VICTOR L. SIMPSON

Pope Benedict XVI, right, walks past an Italian Carabinieri guard as he boards an Alitalia jet bound for Washington, in Rome's Fiumicino international airport, Tuesday April 15, 2008. From a presidential welcome, to two Masses at baseball stadiums, to a stop for prayer at ground zero in New York, the pontiff will get a heavy dose of the American experience in his first pilgrimage to the United States. Benedict departed for Washington on Tuesday, with President George W. Bush planning to make the unusual gesture of greeting him when his special Alitalia jetliner touches down at Andrews Air Force Base - the first time the president has greeted a foreign leader there. Benedict had only begun his six-day journey when he addressed sex abuse, the most painful issue for the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S.

The American church has paid more than $2 billion in costs related to the scandal since 1950 — the majority of that in just the last six years.
