Australian officials to euthanize baby whale

Thursday, August 21, 2008 8:58:18 AM
By KRISTEN GELINEAU

In this handout photo released by NSW Parks and Wildlife, a lost humpback whale calf swims around the Pittwater, north of Sydney Harbour Wednesday, Aug 20, 2008. The 1- to 2-month-old calf was first sighted Sunday in waters off north Sydney, and on Monday tried to suckle from a yacht, which it would not leave. (AP Photo/NSW Parks and Wildlife) SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Officials who had planned to euthanize an injured and abandoned baby whale postponed the operation Thursday night after being unable to find the animal in the dark waters off north Sydney.

Geoff Ross, a wildlife management officer, said the whale was likely frightened and confused by the searchlights and the sound of the boats so they decided it would be easier to find the baby in the daylight.

That is, if it survives the night.
