TORONTO (AP) - Canada said Thursday it would comply with a court order to repatriate a Canadian man with suspected links to al-Qaida who has been stranded in Sudan for six years and sleeping in the foyer of the Canadian embassy for one.
Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said Canada will issue travel documents to Abousfian Abdelrazik. He made the announcement two weeks after a federal court ruled the government violated Abdelrazik's constitutional rights by refusing to give him an emergency passport to fly home, and had 30 days to do so.
Yavar Hameed, one of Abdelrazik's lawyers, welcomed the government's announcement. "This first new development is very encouraging," he said.
