Inmate uses toilet paper 'bomb' to attempt escape

Thursday, July 02, 2009 2:08:48 PM

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) - The Iron County sheriff's office said an inmate tried to escape from a correctional facility by fashioning a fake bomb. Sheriff's Deputy Aaron Pallesen said the 28-year-old inmate cornered an officer in a lobby while holding what looked like a silver device with a red detonator.

Pallesen said deputies tackled the inmate, who allegedly threatened to blow up himself and anything around him if he wasn't released.

A bomb squad found the device was made from toilet paper rolls, headphone wires and a pencil eraser.
